The Biology of Living Cavern Lights
Unlike oceanic dinoflagellates, Waitomo glowworms are the larval stage of a fungus gnat endemic exclusively to New Zealand. Hanging from the damp cave ceilings, each larva constructs silk threads adorned with sticky mucus droplets. To attract flying insects in total darkness, the larva produces a luminous turquoise-green light from its specialized excretory organ.

Before reaching the Glowworm Grotto, visitors traverse the Cathedral, an acoustic marvel 18 meters high with cavernous limestone walls that eliminate echo. To prevent disturbing the sensitive larvae—which dim their glow if exposed to noise or artificial flashes—the boat ride operates in absolute, pin-drop silence.
